CAN’T MISS HOCKEY NEWS 🎯

🧱 Sergei Bobrovsky makes 32 saves, Panthers shut out the Oilers 3-0 in Game 1 of 2024 Stanley Cup Final. Despite the Oilers outshooting the Panthers 12 to 4 in the first period, including multiple breakaway chances, and 32 to 18 for the entire game, McDavid and company could not solve the Panthers’ 35-year-old undrafted superstar netminder who collected his 2nd shutout of this postseason and 3rd of his playoff career.

Bobrovsky became the first goaltender since Roberto Luongo (Vancouver Canucks, 2011), a current member of the Panthers’ front office, to pitch a shutout in game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Carter Verhaeghe gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead 3:59 into the first period, finishing a beautiful Aleksander Barkov backhand feed for his 10th goal — and what proved to be his 3rd game-winner — of the postseason.

Evan Rodrigues buried a Sam Bennett feed past the glove of the Oilers’ Stuart Skinner just over two minutes into the 2nd period for his 4th of the playoffs, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead despite only five shots on goal at this point in the game.

And Eetu Luostarinen buried an empty-netter with 5 seconds remaining in regulation to round out Florida’s game 1 scoring.

Neither team produced on the power play last night as the Panthers went 0-for-2 and the Oilers 0-for-3.

But two areas the Panthers dominated the stat sheet:

  1. Faceoffs: holding a 59.6% to 40.4% winning percentage advantage.

  2. Hits: collecting an astounding 63 hits to the Oilers’ 35.

The Panthers’ captain Aleksander Barkov finished the night with two apples and a +2 rating while mostly matching up against the Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid who collected a -2 in last night’s defeat.

Defenseman Gustav Forsling logged 25:31 of ice time to lead all Panthers and finish second only to the Oilers’ Evan Bouchard (27:17) in that department. Like his captain, Forsling was matched up against McDavid and earned a +2 stat line in the process.

Teams that win Game 1 of a best-of-7 Final hold an all-time series record of 64-20 (.762), including 51-10 (.836) when starting at home. Read more →

The NHL announced the salary cap is going up $4.5 million next season to $88M total, with a salary floor of $65M.

“I know the general managers and the teams are excited to have more flexibility and it means that the revenues are as robust as we’ve been telling you all along.”
