‘Bob’s’ Mastery Over Toronto Continues With Another Win

The Florida Panthers and their goalie Sergei Bobrovsky are a riddle that the Toronto Maple Leafs can’t seem to solve.

The Panthers (2-2-0) downed the Maple Leafs 3-1 Thursday to give them a 6-1-1 record against Toronto in their last eight meetings. That includes a five-game knockout of the Maple Leafs in the playoffs a few months ago. The Panthers have held the Maple Leafs to two or fewer goals in all eight of those matchups.

Bobrovsky made 29 saves to fuel Thursday’s triumph against a Toronto team (2-2-0) that boasts a collection of premium scorers. It was Bob’s 107th win in a Panthers jersey, allowing him to pass John Vanbiesbrouck for second place on the franchise list for goalie wins. Roberto Luongo leads with 230.

“(Bobrovsky) realized he needed to step up,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. “Not that he wasn’t good, but to beat this team, you have to be better than average.”

Earlier in the week, Bobrovsky made 31 saves to spark the Panthers to a 4-3 win against the New Jersey Devils.

“His past two games was elite-level goaltending,’’ Maurice said.

The Panthers reached the Stanley Cup Final last season where they lost to the Vegas Golden Knights. But they started this season with top defensemen Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour on the long-term injured list.

Toronto’s Auston Matthews was kept off the scoreboard for the second consecutive game after netting hat tricks in each of his first two games. The Panthers limited Toronto to just seven shots on goal in the third period.

Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and center Kevin Stenlund each scored their first goals in a Panthers uniform, while Sam Bennett contributed a goal and an assist. The Panthers signed Ekman-Larsson for one year at $2.25 million this summer after the Vancouver Canucks bought out his contract.
