Hartman’s Five Points Fuel Wild Win Over Oilers
Plus, Jordan Eberle's OT winner ends Red Wings' streak, Tyler Toffoli records 5th career hat trick, and a lot more.
Good morning.
First things first: we apologize for our mistake in yesterday’s newsletter. As of yesterday morning, Alex Ovechkin was 73 goals away from breaking (not tying) Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals. Sorry for the brain fart and our fact checking team taking the day off yesterday. 🤦♂️
On to more impressive news: a remarkable 71.88% of yesterday’s poll participants correctly predicted an Alex Ovechkin goal last night.
After being denied on a penalty shot attempt early in the 2nd period, Ovi finally buried his 1st of the season on his 13th shot on goal in a 4-1 loss to the Leafs last night.
In the interest of witnessing history, we hope the floodgates have officially been opened.

Hartman’s Five Points Fuel Wild Win Over Oilers
While the Edmonton Oilers were explaining what it is like to be without injured Connor McDavid, the Minnesota Wild were telling what it’s like to have Ryan Hartman.
The gritty forward netted his second career hat trick en route to a five-point game to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 7-4 win against the Oilers. His first hat trick since 2017 helped Minnesota’s top line enjoy a 10-point night. Kirill Kaprizov finished with three assists and Mats Zuccarello finished with a goal and an assist.
The dangerous Wild trio boasted 15 total points coming into the meeting with the Oilers.
Recently, the three linemates talked about what they could do differently to create a greater offensive presence.
“We’ve been watching some shifts together and too many times we were trying to get inside, or were forcing it a little bit,” Hartman said. “I think we’ve kind of been keeping it and waiting for our moment to strike as opposed to forcing it. We’ve been holding onto it and making really good plays. That was the difference tonight.”
The Wild’s offense is driven by the top line, and the hope in Minnesota is this line can push the Wild toward another strong season. They’ve treaded water in the early going with a 3-2-1 record now.
The Wild scored five goals in the third period for the third time in their history. They scored six in the third period of a 6-2 win against the Dallas Stars on Feb. 22, 2015, and five goals in the third period of a 6-1 win against the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 19, 2005.
They faced an Oilers team that is dealing with a McDavid upper-body injury that will keep him out of the lineup for up to two weeks.
“No one’s going to replace someone like that,” said Oilers forward Warren Foegele who had a pair of goals. “And we need everyone in here to buy in and bring a little bit more, each of us. He’s a huge part of our team. If we have everyone doing a little bit more, I like our chances of being competitive.”

🚨 Jordan Eberle buries OT winner, Kraken end the Red Wings win-streak with 5-4 defeat. Like the Kraken, the 33-year-old forward has had a slow start to the season, entering last night with just 1 point and a -8. Fortunately for Kraken fans, Eberle assisted Jared McCann’s tying goal with just 82 seconds remaining in regulation to force OT before burying a McCann feed with just 5 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Kraken their 2nd win of the season. 🎩 Tyler Toffoli records 5th career hat trick in Devils 5-2 win over the Canadiens. The Scarborough, Ontario native showcased his lethal snapshot, breaking a 1-1 tie late in the 2nd before sniping high glove six seconds into a 3rd period power play. Toffoli capped off his hat trick effort with an empty netter. Jack Hughes collected 4 assists, tying him with Dylan Larkin for the league lead in points with 14, and Vitek Vanecek recorded 27 saves for a .931 save percentage in the win. Read more →
