Reimer Posts 23-Save Shutout in Red Wings’ Debut

James Reimer showed Monday that backup goaltending can be a difference-maker for the Detroit Red Wings in 2023-24.

Reimer posted 23 saves, earning his 29th career shutout, to lead the Red Wings to a 4-0 road triumph against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Reimer joins Dave Gatherum (1953-54) and Ville Husso (2022-23) as the only goalies to record a shutout in their Red Wings' debut. He is only one of the three to earn his shutout on the road.

“James Reimer was the difference in the first period,” Detroit coach Derek LaLonde said. “We didn’t defend very well. We gave up some easy slot looks, which we haven’t really done through camp through the early part of the year and he bailed us out. Very fortunate to get out of the first period 1-0.”

The shutout win by one of Detroit’s backup goalies is a good sign for a Red Wings squad that only had nine wins in 26 starts by backups last season.

GM Steve Yzerman signed Reimer and Alex Lyon this summer with the hope they could upgrade that position. The Red Wings are carrying three goalies to make sure they have the goaltending depth required to compete for an Atlantic Division playoff spot.

Reimer, 35, signed a one-year deal ($1.5 million) with the Red Wings in July after spending two seasons with the San Jose Sharks. Before playing in San Jose, he spent time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes. He's always held the reputation of a goalie who works well as a backup or in a tandem with another netminder. He has never played 50 games in a season during his long NHL career. Reimer owns a career .911 save percentage. It's that consistency that the Red Wings wanted.

"Maybe we didn’t start the way we wanted to but the way we buckled down the last 40," Reimer said. "It was pretty special just to sit back there and watch the boys go to work."

The Red Wings, out of the playoffs for the past seven seasons, are encouraged by a 2-1 start. They have scored 13 goals in their first three games, more encouragement for a team that averaged 2.93 goals per game last season. They play the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday.
