Oettinger, Stars Add to Flames’ Losing Streak

No NHL goalie is hotter than Dallas Stars’ Jake Oettinger.

The 24-year-old Minnesota native made 43 saves Wednesday to lead the Stars to a 4-3 win against the struggling Calgary Flames. Oettinger doesn’t have a regulation loss this season: He is 5-0-1 with a 1.95 goals-against average and .939 save percentage.

"Jakey's a stud," Dallas forward Jamie Benn said. "We don't get any of those wins without him. He's played some great hockey to start the year here. We obviously want to keep improving in front of him."

Benn put up a shorthanded goal, plus an assist, for the Stars who are a point behind the Colorado Avalanche for first place in the Central Division. Mason Marchment, Evgenii Dadonov and Jason Robertson also scored for Dallas. Roope Hintz had two assists. Benn and Hintz are tied for the team lead with eight points.

Dallas has been scoring by committee this season: five players have scored three goals for the team and no one has four.

The Stars beat a Flames team that has lost six consecutive games. Opponents have outscored Calgary 24-9 in the six losses.

The most impressive aspect of the Stars’ 6-1-1 start is they believe they are still working to get their game where they want it to be. For example, they were out-shot badly (22-5) in the third period against the Flames.

"We're working through it,” Dallas coach Peter DeBoer said in the post-game press conference. "We're working on our game. We're building our game. There's lessons being learned. At the same time we're 6-1-1, so it's good, and these are tough teams and tough buildings and desperate teams we're playing. We'll take as many wins as we can get."
