The Nova Scotia native collected 1st period assists on Valeri Nichushkin and Mikko Rantanen goals, snapped a puck off the right post and in for his 13th goal of the season early in the 2nd, and buried an empty netter with less than five minutes to play for his 4th point of the night, extending his point streak to 15 games. The 33-year-old veteran forward deflected a Pavel Mintyukov shot through the legs of Akira Schmid for his 1st of the night to open scoring just 1:46 into regulation, banged home a rebound less than 10 minutes later for the eventual game-winner, and hit the empty net for his 1st NHL hat trick in his 859th career game, coincidentally against his former team. The 33-year-old netminder was nearly flawless, recording 28 saves and a .966 save percentage in regulation before stopping all three Hurricanes shootout attempts in the Capitals win. Martin Fehervary scored his 1st of the season midway through the 2nd for the Capitals lone regulation goal and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in the shootout as the Capitals have earned points in five of their past six games.
