CAN’T MISS HOCKEY NEWS 🎯

💰 Leon Draisaitl is committed to being an "Oiler for life" after signing an eight-year, $112 million contract extension, making it the highest annual salary ($14M) in NHL history. Draisaitl, who posted 106 points last season and led Edmonton to the Stanley Cup Final, was set to become a free agent next summer. The German forward has tallied 347 goals and 503 assists, totaling 850 points across 719 regular-season games since his 2014 rookie season — check out today’s trivia to find out which two players have scored more points during that span. The front-loaded deal includes a full no-move clause. General Manager Stan Bowman called Draisaitl irreplaceable and prioritized the extension after his summer hiring. With Draisaitl signed, the Oilers now face future negotiations with Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard. Read more →

💔 John and Matthew Gaudreau put to rest with heartfelt tributes. At a tearful funeral, Meredith Gaudreau eulogized her husband, John, revealing she is expecting their third child. Meredith spoke fondly of their time together as a family of four, calling it ‘the best six months’ of her life. The service, held at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, was attended by many, including NHL players and Commissioner Gary Bettman. Both brothers were remembered for their inseparable bond and deep love for family. Matthew’s wife, Madeline, also shared the news of her pregnancy, promising to honor his legacy. Read more →

POLL 🗳️

Who scores the most goals this season from this group of 40+ goal scorers last season?

Last Tuesday’s poll: How many goals will Patrik Laine score this season?

37% of last Tuesday’s poll participants believe Patrik Laine will score 20-29 goals this season with one loyal reader offering this hot take:

“The guy has team hopped enough and hasn't proven himself...enough is enough.”

- Heidi

In fairness, Heidi, the Montreal Canadiens will only be Laine’s 3rd NHL team in his 9th NHL season… he’s no Crosby or Yzerman who remained with the teams that drafted him, but 3 teams across 9 seasons isn’t anything crazy.

Regardless, if he remains healthy, I predict he’ll handedly score 30+ goals and might even break the 40-goal mark for the 2nd time in his NHL career.

ICYMI ❤️

Cole Caufield announced he’s changing his number with the Canadiens to #13 in honor of Johnny Gaudreau in a heartfelt Instagram post last Wednesday, including this snippet:

“I wore #13 at a point in my career because of Johnny and now I will be wearing it again to honor him. He paved the way for smaller players and proved we had a future in this game at the highest level. I will forever be grateful to him for inspiring me and others.”
