Ducks Stun Bruins With Late Comeback Win in Boston

The Boston Bruins, based on points, are the best team in the Eastern Conference and the Anaheim Ducks were statistically one of the worst NHL teams.

But you would not have known that by what occurred in the closing minutes of last night’s game.

Trailing 3-1, the Ducks received goals by rookie Leo Carlsson and go-to scorer Troy Terry to tie the contest. The Ducks then won it 4-3 on Mason McTavish’s tally 2:08 into overtime. The Bruins are now 6-0-1 and Anaheim is 3-4-0.

“It was nice to get rewarded there at the end,” McTavish said.

This come-from-behind triumph marks the first time in franchise history the Ducks have won a game after trailing by multiple goals in the final two minutes. The Ducks had their goalie pulled for an extra attacker on both goals. Carlsson scored at 18:05 of the third period and Terry found the net with 15 seconds left in regulation time. Carlsson was on a 2-on-1 with McTavish when he scored in OT.

Carlsson, picked No. 2 overall in the 2023 draft, and Terry both ended up with a goal and an assist in the game.

The young Swede Carlsson (18 years, 304 days) is the third-youngest player in team history with a multipoint game behind defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky (18 years, 250 days; three assists on Jan. 23, 1995) and McTavish (18 years, 256 days; one goal and one assist on Oct. 13, 2021).

The Ducks win ended the Bruins’ 14-game home winning streak that dated to March 30 of last season.

“I thought the game was over twice,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “We could have extended our lead to four or five (goals). We had many opportunities to do it, and we didn’t finish the game. So, you couple those things together, it’s inexcusable. You can’t be up 3-1 with five minutes left and end up tied and going to overtime.”
