The 26-year-old sniper recorded his third hat trick in just his 11th game of the season Saturday night in a 6-4 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. Thanks to his hot start, Matthews leads the entire NHL with 11 goals with four players (Pastrnak, DeBrincat, Vatrano, & Konecny) tied for 2nd with 9 thus far this season. Matthews is chasing his 3rd Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, having won it back-to-back in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

No surprise at all: Wayne Gretzky holds the NHL’s single-season hat trick record having collected 10 hat tricks in the 1981-82 and 1983-84 seasons.
