Bruins Rank No. 1 in Top 10 NHL Goalie Tandems
At this time of year, media outlets like to rank the league’s goaltenders. But it’s a completely different list when you rank NHL tandems. Some backups help a team’s ranking and others drop a team that boasts an elite No. 1.
Here’s our list of top 10 goalie tandems entering the 2023-24 NHL season:
1. Linus Ullmark & Jeremy Swayman, Boston Bruins: NHL Network ranked Ullmark 6th overall and Swayman has the potential to be a top 10 goalie.
2. Ilya Sorokin & Semyon Varlamov, New York Islanders: Some hockey people think Sorokin is challenging to be the NHL’s No. 1 goalie. Meanwhile, the 35-year-old Varlamov has a career 2.65 GAA and .916 save percentage.
3. Juuse Saros & Kevin Lankinen, Nashville Predators: Saros is a top five goalie in the NHL and Lankinen is an underrated backup. He posted a .916 save percentage last season.
4. Andrei Vasilevskiy & Joonas Johansson, Tampa Bay Lightning: Vasilevskiy is generally considered the league’s No. 1 goalie, but Johansson still needs to prove his ability.
5. Igor Shesterkin & Jonathan Quick, New York Rangers: There’s no denying Shesterkin’s place among the NHL’s top three goalies. At 37, Quick isn’t the goalie he was in his prime. But he looked OK (5-2-2) late in the season in Vegas.
6. Adin Hill & Logan Thompson, Vegas Golden Knights: Hill proved his value in last spring’s playoffs and Thompson has frequently looked impressive. This could end up close to a split.
7. Alexandar Georgiev & Pavel Francouz, Colorado Avalanche: Georgiev has arrived as a top 10 goalie and Francouz (2.49 GAA, .919 save percentage) is an exceptional backup.
8. Filip Gustavsson & Marc-Andre Fleury, Minnesota Wild: Gustavsson has earned his place in the top 10 and backup MAF is a Hall of Famer.
9. Sergei Bobrovsky & Spencer Knight, Florida Panthers: This ranking is a projection, more than an earned place. It’s hard to know exactly where Knight’s game is at because he missed development time last season. But he has overflowing talent. If he rises up, this could be one of the league’s strongest tandems.
10. Connor Hellebuyck & Laurent Brossoit, Winnipeg Jets: Hellebuyck is an elite goalie, but Brossoit holds the pairing back just a bit because his career has been up and down. But he had some promising moments with the Golden Knights.
