Boeser Scores Four Goals to Help Canucks Win Opener
Brock Boeser endured the worst goal-scoring rate of his eight-season NHL career in 2022-23 and vowed to become a more productive player.
His pledge is off to an exceptional start after he scored four goals in a game for the first time in his career to carry the Vancouver Canucks to an 8-1 routing of the Edmonton Oilers.
“I got to that (confident) mindset in the summer where I’ve got to be a better hockey player and really work hard,” Boeser said. “I came back and it continues every day. I’ve got to have that same mindset tomorrow, the next practice, the morning skate, I’ve got to keep it going.”
Last season, Boeser didn’t score in the first 11 games of the season and finished with 18 goals in 74 games. He had netted 23 goals in each of the two previous seasons. Boeser has scored 20 or more four times, including 29 in 2017-18.
His four goals tied the team record for the most by a Canucks player in a season opener (Greg Adams on Oct. 8, 1987 and Rick Blight on Oct. 6, 1976). This was his fourth career hat trick, and his first since Oct. 30, 2019.
The Canucks held a points parade against the Oilers: J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson each totaled a goal and three assists. Defenseman Quinn Hughes posted three assists. The Canucks’ eight goals tied the 45-year-old team record for a season opener. It was set on Oct. 11, 1978 and tied the first time in 1987.
It was a strongly-needed quality start for a Canucks team that has missed the playoffs for seven out of the past eight seasons.
This was a dud launch for an Oilers team that believes it has a true shot at winning the Stanley Cup. The Canucks chased Edmonton starting goalie Jack Campbell after he gave up four goals on his first 16 shots of the season. Goalless Connor McDavid’s plus-minus was -3.
“We laid an egg tonight. We all own it,” Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. “We're all in this one together, and the bottom line is we were at a preseason level of work ethic and a preseason level of execution, all of us.”

🎩 Auston Matthews scored a hat trick in 6-5 shootout in over the Canadiens. The 26-year-old forward rifled a power play tally under the bar with just over 5 minutes remaining in the 2nd for his 300th NHL goal, becoming the fastest Maple Leaf to reach the milestone in franchise history. Matthews buried his 2nd and 3rd goals with the Leafs goalie pulled to force overtime before Mitch Marner scored high glove in the shootout to seal the come-from-behind win. Read more →
☝️ Connor Bedard scored his 1st career NHL goal in 3-1 loss to the Bruins. Just over 5 minutes into his 2nd career game the 18-year-old buried a wrap-around to give the Blackhawks their only lead of the game. Bruins’ forward Trent Frederic tied it not even 6 minutes later with a tip, before midway through the 2nd David Pastrnak wired a wrister past Soderblom’s glove, the eventual game winner, before adding an empty netter for his 2nd of the game.
