What Decline? Boston Bruins Start 5-0
NHL consensus was the retirement of veteran centers Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci would trigger the decline of the Boston Bruins.
It turns out the Bruins don’t accept that theory.
The Bruins, who set an NHL record of 135 points last season, have launched the 2023-24 season with five consecutive wins. Their fifth came Sunday night on a 3-1 triumph over the Anaheim Ducks.
Boston joined the Colorado Avalanche (5-0) and the Vegas Golden Knights (6-0) as the league’s last remaining undefeated teams.
This represents the Bruins’ best start since the team began the 1937-38 campaign at 6-0.
“Three (games) in four (days) on the road against an Anaheim Duck team that played really physical, played with a lot of emotion and they had us on our heels in the first there, physically," Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. "I think we got a little bit better as the game continued to go on, but it was a big win for us."
Although the Bruins lost Bergeron and Krejci, they still have impact player Brad Marchand on one line and dynamic scorer David Pastrnak on another. Marchand scored an empty netter against Anaheim to give him seven points in five games. Pastrnak was blanked in this game after scoring in each of the first four Boston games.
The Bruins also have last season’s Vezina-Trophy winning goalie Linus Ullmark who made 32 saves against Anaheim.
Nineteen-year-old rookie center Matthew Poitras was Boston’s hero against the Ducks. He scored the first two goals of his NHL career.
"It's pretty surreal, just seeing the puck go in the net is really exciting," Poitras said. "I don't really know what I did. I kind of blacked out a little bit, but super excited and happy."
The Bruins drafted Poitras 54th overall in the 2022 NHL draft. He played for the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League.
