Trophy Predictions for the 2023-24 NHL Season
The NHL launches its 2023-24 season tonight with three games including Connor Bedard’s much-anticipated pro debut.
The Chicago Blackhawks rookie’s first NHL game has added spice because it comes against Sidney Crosby and his Pittsburgh Penguins.
Although Bedard and Crosby play different styles, Bedard is projected to reach the level of stardom that Crosby achieved.
With the green flag out for the season, we offer our picks for this season’s end-of-the-year trophies:
Hart Trophy (Most Valuable Player): At 26, Connor McDavid is ready to have the best season of his career. He may push toward 170 points. More importantly, he is poised to help the Edmonton Oilers build on last season’s 109-point season.
Maurice “Rocket” Richard (Leading goal scorer): McDavid. He could net 70 this season.
Vezina Trophy (Top Goalie): Ilya Sorokin. In his first three seasons, he owns a 2.33 goals-against average and .924. He’s 28, in the prime of his career. He seems primed for a memorable season.
Norris Trophy (Top Defenseman): A healthy Cale Makar could flirt with 100 points and help his Colorado team become the best team in the Western Conference.
Calder Trophy (Rookie of the Year): Connor Bedard. He could average a point per game and instantly become one of the NHL’s most entertaining players.
Selke Trophy (Best Defensive Forward): Nico Hischier. With Patrice Bergeron retired, the two-way New Jersey Devils center is the favorite.
President’s Trophy (Best regular-season team): Carolina Hurricanes. With the Boston Bruins expected to fall this season, the Hurricanes could win the President’s Trophy with a 116-point season.
Stanley Cup Champion: Colorado Avalanche. Even without injured captain Gabriel Landeskog, the Avalanche have enough
